We're gonna use what we got to get what we want

Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, Tammy Montgomery (later known as Tammy Terrell) and Vickie Anderson were some of the strongest voices of the 60’s and early 70’s soul/funk era, but they were totally overlooked because they were James Brown’s backup singers. Their records are hard to find (albeit some of the LPs have been reissued, namely Marva Whitney and Lyn Collins) but you can get all their greatest material packed into a seriously kick ass 2-CD set called James Brown’s Original Funky Divas. You can hear clips of the songs here.

Not only do I recommend the above-mentioned CD, but here are three more albums I recommend:

Marva Whitney: It’s My Thing
Lyn Collins: Think (About it)
Lyn Collins: Check Me Out if You Don’t Know Me By Now

Here's a brutal song by Lyn Collins (off the Think album)

...and my favorite song on the compilation CD, Tammy Montgomery’s If You Don’t Think. Seriously, listen to this, this shit is CLASSIC!!:
