Wish upon a star



One of my favorite albums is Mazzy Star's 1990 debut album, She Hangs Brightly. Hope Sandoval's vocals are effortless and hypnotic, almost with a child-like innocence. Not too mention, she's breathtakingly gorgeous. She looks like a mix between Helena Bonham Carter and a young Toni Basil. On this album, they do an amazing version of Memphis Minnie's "I'm Sailin". Amazing, right? Now listen to Mazzy Star's version here. People are most familiar with the bands international hit "Fade Into You", which is a great tune, but literally everybody needs to get into their first album. Their second album, So Tonight That I Might See, is just as good. One of my favorite songs off this album is called "Blue Light" and it leaves me feeling totally empty, sad and lonely. But in a good way (if that even makes sense). Listen:

Lastly, a seriously great and underrated collaboration between two greats: Hope Sandoval and Jesus and Mary Chain, "Sometimes Always", off JAMC's (pretty good actually!) album Stoned and Dethroned:
